5 Unique Museums in Houston

Houston is a great city to spend a day at a museum. It has great art, history, and natural science museums, but it’s also home to a great number of more unique museums you won’t find anywhere else. Here are our five favorite museums that offer up unique experiences and insights.

Art Car Museum

If you’re a fan of the strange and overlooked, head over to the Art Car Museum. It’s a contemporary art museum that focuses on artistic modifications to vehicles, hence “art car.” The museum also showcases other mediums that aren’t prevalent in the mainstream art world. If you’re a fan of cars, you’ll find some great models here — but some of them have been made to look like cockroaches or have been filled with soil.  Every piece is a conversation-starter at this interesting museum.

National Museum of Funeral History

For a unique look into the world of funeral services, check out the National Museum of Funeral History. Peruse America’s largest collection of items and equipment used in funerals throughout history. Hearses, coffins, caskets, urns, this museum has it all. A visit to the National Museum of Funeral History is a unique education in cultural practices not often spoken about.

1940 Air Terminal Museum

Step back in time at the 1940 Air Terminal Museum. Explore art deco architecture and design, watch one of the daily air shows, and explore what traveling was like in the 1940s. A nonprofit is still restoring the beautiful building, as well as the nearby Carter Field Airmail Hangar, which was built it 1928. But, visitors can explore the entire ground floor, which holds the museum. It is a must-see for any American history buff.

Houston Maritime Museum

Whether or not you’re an enthusiast of boats and sailing, the Houston Maritime Museum offers a unique insight into a very important part of our culture. Take a guided tour to see artifacts, replicas, and important items of maritime history. Get the chance to see their great collection of ship models to see how the ships of today became what they are. This is one of the greatest museums to get an in-depth look at the history of our sea-faring ancestors.

The Museum of Printing History

Since 1979, the Museum of Printing History has given people the opportunity to experience the history of printing, from the very first printing press to the modern era. The museum has special exhibitions of art and artifacts throughout the year, so plan your visit accordingly. Their permanent collection holds some amazing pieces, though — ancient scrolls, Asian printing types, manuscripts, a working Gutenberg press, and much more. This is the best place in Houston to learn about the craft that molded the world into the place it is today.

These are just a handful of the great museums and galleries you’ll find throughout the city. Take some time to explore these and the many other interesting museums in Houston and let us know what your favorites are.
