2020 Houston RodeoThe Houston Rodeo has something for everybody! In order to maximize your fun, you should know all the ins and outs of the pre-rodeo events and the 3 types of rodeo events.

The pre-rodeo events include the Bar-B-Que Contest, Best Bites Competition, Go Texan Day, Rodeo Roundup, ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run, a parade, trail rides, and a wine show & auction.

  • The Bar-B-Que Contest will be held from 2/27 to 2/29 this year. Over 250 teams will compete in the World Championship Bar-B-Que Contest. The carnival will be operating for rides and fun games. There will be artists performing, a DJ, an outdoor patio, and you can pick up your free sliced brisket plate with chips and beans.
  • The Best Bites Competition will be on 2/23. This event includes over 450 award-winning wines and you can sample dishes from about 100 of Houston’s top restaurants.

  • For Go Texan Day on 2/28, your organization can win prizes and gain notoriety while celebrating Go Texan Day and Western Heritage during the season. Entry only requires the organization to upload a video showing how they celebrated.
  • The Rodeo Roundup takes place on 2/25 and includes music, free lunch and soft drink, and games. Listen to Rodeo Choir perform songs and take a photo with a Texas Longhorn steer.
  • The Rodeo Run on 2/29 is for a great cause. Proceeds go to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Educational Fund. There will be a wheelchair race, 10k race, and a 5k fun run/walk.
  • The parade on 2/29 will be in Downtown Houston and will include thousands of men and women on horseback, floats, and marching bands.
  • For the trail rides on 2/28 and 2/29, more than 2,000 riders will recreate the ride 4 men took in 1952 to spread awareness of the Houston Rodeo.
  • On 3/1 the Champion Wine Auction & Dinner will kick-off. It begins with a cocktail hour, then a silent auction starts for wines, trips, and other items. Dinner is in the ballroom and purchased items can be taken home that night.

Actual rodeo events include the Super Series, the Super Shootout, and Rodeo 101.

  • The Super Series lasts 19 days and includes bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, and women’s barrel racing. Every champion wins $50,000, a custom saddle and belt buckle, and an invitation to the rodeo next year.
  • The Super Shootout on 3/15 is an invitation-only event and includes a $250,000 purse. This event will feature reigning champions in five traditional events. They will compete as individuals and teams in bareback riding, barrel racing, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, and steer wrestling.
  • Rodeo 101, as an overview, includes the grand entry, a National Anthem salute, tie-down roping, bareback riding, team roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, bull riding, chuck wagon races, calf scramble, and mutton bustin’.
