Fall has arrived in Houston, and with it comes mild temperatures that are ideal for getting outside and exploring the area. If you’re interested in heading out on a fall getaway to somewhere around Houston, you’ll have a great time if you check out one of these top spots.

Lost Maples State Natural Area
Situated 4.75 hours away from Houston in the Edwards Plateau region, Lost Maples State Natural Area offers a stunning escape from the city. While the pristine hills and canyons are beautiful anytime of year, they’re truly spectacular when the leaves begin to change color. Along with the Texas red oak, which turns a fiery shade of crimson, the land is also home to a special type of bigtooth maple that changes to lovely shades of orange and yellow. If you’re looking for some outdoor fun to take in the lovely views, the natural area has 11 miles of hiking trails.
Kemah Boardwalk
Located about 45 minutes southwest of Houston in Kemah, the Kemah Boardwalk offers a getaway the entire family will enjoy. For heart-pounding excitement, head to the Boardwalk Bullet, which is a wooden roller coaster that reaches speeds up to 51 mph, or the Flare, which is a 73-foot tall looping roller coaster. For something a little more relaxing, you can ride the double-decker carousel or Ferris wheel. You can also test your skills at the midway games and arcade or grab a bite to eat at one of the 10 restaurants.
Messina Hof Winery
If you’re interested in a romantic getaway, you can’t beat some time away at Messina Hof Winery. Situated about an hour and a half northwest of Houston in Bryan, the Messina Hof Winery is the third-oldest winery in the state. Spend the night at the Villa Bed & Breakfast before taking a tour of the winery, enjoying samples of the award-winning wines in the tasting room, and savoring a delicious meal at the Vintage House Restaurant.
Fortuna Bay Bed and Breakfast
When your fall getaway takes you to Fortuna Bay Bed and Breakfast, you can plan to do as much or as little as you want. This complex of converted condos is about 3.75 hours away in Corpus Christi. Each rental comes with its own boat slip, and the entire complex is within walking distance of the beach. You can relax by the pool, go fishing, check out the fun attractions in Corpus Christi, or simply kick back and do nothing at all.
Barrington Living History Farm
If you’re interested in history, the 1.5-hour trip to Barrington Living History Farm in Washington is worth the trip. The farm’s staff dress up in traditional clothing to demonstrate what life was like in the mid 1800s for people of this small town. Since you’re also encouraged to take an active role in working on the farm, it’s also a great place for children to learn something new.
When you’re ready to hit the road for a getaway this fall, these destinations near Houston offer something for everyone.
