  1. Lawndale Art Center

Lawndale Art Center is a non-profit space founded in 1979 by James Surls that is located in an exquisite 1930s Art Deco building on 4912 Main Street in Houston’s popular Museum District. The purpose of this art center is to display contemporary artwork in all media created by Houston based artists. Lawndale Art Center is a staple of the creative community that offers over twenty exhibitions annually, informal talks, and special events like the popular Dia de Los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), the Big Show, and the Design Fair.

Take a trip to Lawndale Art Center to view a variety of creative work by both upcoming and established artists. The museum is open Wednesday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

  1. The Menil Collection

Considered to be one of the most valuable privately-owned art collections of the twentieth century, The Menil Collection was founded in 1987 to display the art collection of John and Dominique de Menil. A global destination for art lovers and one of the top free places to visit in Houston, the museum houses over 17,000 objects of art that date back as far as the Paleolithic era.

The Menil Collection contains a wide spectrum of artwork, including sculpture, painting, photography, and more. Samples span a vast time period, from the medieval era to mid-century, and include works by famous artists like Warhol and Magritte. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

  1. Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC)

Founded in 2012, the Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) is one of the newest museums in Texas and also one of the best places to visit if you love history. The purpose of HMAAC is to collect, preserve, interpret, and display the cultures of Africans and African Americans living in Houston, Texas, and African Diaspora. The museum offers lectures, dynamic programs, and exhibitions that are intended to inform and include people of all colors.

HMAAC explores a unique perspective of African American history through film series and educational classes. The museum is open on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  1. The Printing Museum

The Printing Museum was established in 1988 and is located at 1324 W. Clay Street. The museum tells the story of written communication and how the technologies of printing have impacted modern life. Follow the evolution of printing through its effect on written communication in ancient Mesopotamia to the invention of Johann Gutenberg’s printing press as well as present innovations.

The Printing Museum exhibits different collections of letterpress, lithography, and papermaking tools that guide visitors through printing’s compelling history. The museum is open Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free for children aged 12 and under.
