Houston offers a wide variety of cuisines, but if you have spent any time in Houston, you know their favorites include Creole and Cajun food, like gumbo and jambalaya.  Other local cuisines include chicken-fried steak and, of course, chili. Here are some of the Houston dishes you must try.

Chicken and Waffles

Chicken and waffles is a traditional southern dish, and The Breakfast Klub in Houston serves the best in the area. This restaurant serves six crispy pieces of fried chicken with a thick Belgian waffle, all topped with powdered sugar and a fresh strawberry. Located on Travis and Alabama Streets, The Breakfast Klub is a popular spot, so the line is usually out the door during the busy times.
You can also get excellent chicken and waffles from The Waffle Bus, a food truck that roves around Houston. Their chicken and waffles comes with a choice of spicy mayo, ancho chili honey, or buffalo ranch, or you can get wings and waffles with maple syrup.

Pansoti

For the best pansoti in Houston, head to Tony’s. A staple in Houston for almost 50 years, Tony fills their handmade pansoti with rich butternut squash and then tops it with a Parmesan puff. The pasta is always made fresh, and the dish includes a sage essence to give it just the right amount of flavor. This pansoti is light and flavorful but still filling, and you can taste the freshly made pasta in every bite. You can also get delicious pansoti at Ciao Bello in Houston, which serves a very similar pansoti made with the same fresh ingredients.

Barbecue Brisket

Head to Killen’s to get the best brisket in Houston. Considered the gold standard in Houston, their brisket is always moist and comes with just the right amount of fat, although you can request either more or less fat depending on your preference. You can order the brisket on its own along with a choice of sides, or get a combo plate with two different types of meat. Killen’s also smokes the brisket just right so it has lots of flavor, and it comes out so moist and tender, it falls apart as you pick it up to eat it.

Chili

Unlike other types of chili, Texas chili is full of meat and skips the beans. In Houston, there are a few places you can get a great bowl of chili. Molina’s Cantina serves a deliciously rich chili made with simple ingredients. There are no beans and no tomatoes in this chili, just ancho chili pods, beef, cumin, and garlic.
Vallone’s also serves a fantastic chili, but since it’s only available at lunch, you’ll have to get there early. This place uses a blend of ground beef and beef chunks seasoned with just the right mix of spices and chili peppers.
Whether you enjoy a traditional barbecue or you like a spicy chili for lunch, you can get it along with much more in this lively city.
