RV Trailer Next To Camp SiteRV camping is a popular and fun pastime for many people around the country. Whether you live in Houston and want to visit the surrounding area or you’re traveling to Houston to check out the camping opportunities, there are certain things you should keep in mind. To make sure your next camping trip around Houston is enjoyable, keep these important tips in mind.

Check out Some of the Great Parks

Although many people choose to stay at one of the private campgrounds around Houston, the area has several parks with beautiful camping areas. Lake Houston Wilderness Park is located about 30 minutes north of downtown Houston and offers 4,500 acres of wooded area and 20 miles of biking and hiking trails for you to explore. You can also stay at Brazos Bend State Park, which has 37 miles of biking, hiking, and equestrian trails that let you see the diverse wildlife of the swamp.

Make Sure Your Air Conditioning Is Working

If you plan on camping in Houston in the summer and your RV comes with air conditioning, you definitely want to make sure it’s working before you arrive. With summer high temperatures that routinely top 100 degrees, Houston affectionately touts itself as “the world’s most air-conditioned city.” If you don’t have air conditioning in your RV, make sure you pack a few fans to help make sleeping at night a little easier.

Check the Weather Forecast

Along with sweltering temperatures, Houston can also experience some extreme weather. During spring, supercell thunderstorms can occasionally roll through the area. There’s always a chance a hurricane could hit the area during the Atlantic hurricane season, which typically runs from June 1 to November 30. Plus, fall weather in Houston is notoriously unpredictable. This is why it always helps to check the forecast before you leave for your camping trip.

Don’t Forget the Bug Spray

Houston often ranks as one of the worst cities in the country for mosquitoes. In fact, the area has up to 56 different species of mosquitoes. Not only are they a pest that can cause itchy bites, but they can also carry serious diseases, such as Zika and West Nile virus. To make sure these biting pests don’t bother you while you’re camping in Houston, make sure you pack the bug spray and then use it when you’re outside. It’s also important to remember that mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk.

Reserve Your Spot Before You Travel

Camping around Houston is an extremely popular activity. Some campgrounds and RV parks have all their spots reserved months in advance. Also, depending on the size of your RV, you might be limited on where you can stay. You would hate to arrive at the campground only to find out it doesn’t have a spot available, so be sure you make a reservation before you leave to ensure you have a spot.

Camping around Houston offers plenty of fun and a great way to explore the area. If you’re planning a camping trip to Houston, follow these tips to ensure you enjoy a wonderful stay.
