The 2018 Ford Explorer is eight years into its current model life cycle, yet still retains good looks and a modern stance. The most common engine is a 3.5 liter V-6 offering 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. It is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission with sport mode which keeps the transmission longer in each gear and provides crisp shifts. There is also a 2.3 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder offering 280 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. Top trims use a twin-turbo 3.5 liter V-6 developing 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque and sold only with all-wheel drive. The suspension is front struts and rear multi-links, with Sport models using a stiffer suspension and beefier stabilizer bars.

The Explorer seats seven in three rows of seats, with the third row best used for children or smaller adults. The two front rows offer generous room, and customers can opt for second-row captains chairs for a more comfortable passenger experience. The third row folds down and away for cargo, with some trims offering powered rather than manual stowage. Stow both rows of standard rear seats and the Explorer offers 81 cubic feet of cargo space and a load floor that?s nearly flat and covered with tough carpeting. Leave all the seats up and you still have 21 cubic feet for groceries or small bags. Ford has also pleased owners by recently switching out touch sensitive buttons on the dash with real buttons and knobs. They are more convenient for allowing drivers to keep more attention on the road or when wearing gloves in winter conditions.

All Explorers have rearview cameras. Most trims have forward emergency warning with automatic braking. Those who tow will appreciate trailer sway control, a max 5,000 pound towing capacity with proper equipment, and a special Curve Control to maintain trailer stability on curvy roads. All trims have Bluetooth, an audio system with at least six speakers, steering wheel controls, and a minimum 4.2-inch infotainment touchscreen. Higher trims include the XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum. By the time owners get to Platinum the Explorer will be fully loaded with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warnings, moonroof, leather seating, wood grain trim, automatic parking assist, and a heated steering wheel.
